THE FILM

A synopsis.

A mysterious threat now looms over the world, leaving few survivors and extinguishing any laws and ways of the previous life. Within it, a small group of four based in a cabin are now facing their first true test of adapting to it in the very early days of this post-apocalyptic world.

Austin, 29, and Wyatt, 28, long-time best friends from their previous lives, return early from their food and supply run. Solo, 17, Austin's younger brother, and Vincent, 45, a survivor they'd found along their way and brought in, are shocked when they see who else enters with Austin and Wyatt. A beaten and unconscious Dwight, 17, is dragged along in with the two men.

Dwight and an accomplice had attacked the two men, attempting to rob them, although Wyatt knocked out Dwight, and the other had run away. Wyatt and Austin's mentalities of risks, morality, and safety clash as Wyatt displays his disgust at Austin's reluctance to leave Dwight behind.

During the time leading up to the group's discussion, Austin confides in Vincent's wise and calm nature, vulnerably revealing his struggles with the idea of murder, and Vincent assures him that the principles of morality will always be correct. Meanwhile, Wyatt begins planting the seeds in an impressionable Solo. He tries to use their history and the "older brother/uncle" type of relationship they have, to force his beliefs on the risks of keeping Dwight here, suggesting that he could get loose and kill them all or escape and bring his own group.

At the time of the decision-making, the entire group is now truly faced with their first test in morality and their adaption to this new lawless world. Simultaneously, the struggles and issues of masculinity are displayed through the clashing of mentalities between the two desirous leaders. And so, regardless of the result of the debate, the conflict only deepens, and then transforms into the extent of how far either is willing to go to ensure that their mindset prevails.

THE FACTS

Who we are and what our goal is.

We are five Film Production students creating a film for our final year's dissertation project.

However, this description of us and the project is just a minor detail ultimately.

More than anything, we are a group of four extremely driven and desiring filmmakers, and we're committed to being as ambitious as we can possibly be in our art, through the medium of storytelling.

We want to tell a story that engages the viewer. And not just while watching the film, but afterward as well.

We believe that not only can storytelling tell fascinating narratives, but it can also be a form of communication; from the filmmaker to the viewer. Ideas, concepts, and feelings can be presented or symbolised for viewers to process through their own unique perspectives.

And so, despite this being a student short film, we are truly motivated to develop this ambitious project where we hope to tackle the complicated themes of morality, adaption, manipulation, and the issues/struggles surrounding masculinity within the desiring of leadership roles, all throughout an engaging story.

THE MISSION

Our plan.

The Wrath Within Mercy is primarily a joint collaboration for a dissertation at an end-of-year assignment, from five students. Therefore, first and foremost, the film will be released to our examiners through our submissions for the assignment.

However, we also hope for our film to be selected by several small short-film festivals that are either student-oriented or include a student short-film category. This includes the LSFF2023 (London Short Film Festival), as well as the NSF2023 (Norwich Film Festival). The LSFF is a more general option as they are open to student short films, but also other short films from a large variety of other means. On the other hand, the NSF offers a specific student film category.
